Full course description
About the course
In this course we are going to learn about restrictive practice in mental health - in the UK and internationally, what it means, how common it is, what impact it has on patients, and ways we can try to reduce it.
Restrictive interventions are deliberate acts that restrict a patient’s movement, liberty and/or freedom to act independently. Restrictive practice refers to the overall culture in which these occur,
There is an increasing awareness nationally and internationally regarding the potential harm of restrictive practice, especially after some high-profile scandals. We know that restrictive interventions can cause physical and emotional harm and although are necessary at times need to be used proportionately.
This course is for all professionals in the UK and internationally who have an interest in understanding about what restrictive practice is and how we can reduce it.
During the course, you will learn through a combination of articles, videos, discussions and assignments. We will also be hearing from Sean, a former patient now a discharge coordinator who talks about his experiences and his journey through the mental health system.
